When You Don’t Know What Comes Next
Finding peace in God’s guidance when the road ahead is difficult to see
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
There are seasons when life does not give us a clear map. We may be waiting for an answer, facing a difficult decision, or trying to understand a situation that changed without warning. We look ahead and wonder what will happen next. We look back and question whether we made the right choice. In the middle of all those questions, it can be hard to feel steady.
God understands that feeling. He does not ask us to pretend that we have no worries or to hide the questions we carry. We can bring Him our uncertainty honestly. We can ask for wisdom, tell Him what frightens us, and admit when we cannot see the way forward.
Trusting God One Step at a Time
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us that trusting God does not mean we understand every part of our lives. It means bringing Him our plans, choices, and concerns, and remembering that His wisdom reaches farther than our view of this moment.
We often want God to show us the entire journey before we move. We want to know how every problem will end and when every prayer will be answered. Yet sometimes God guides us one step at a time. He may give us enough light for today without showing us everything that lies beyond it.
That small step still matters. It may be a conversation we have been avoiding, a decision to ask for help, a quiet moment of prayer, or the courage to begin again. We do not have to solve tomorrow before we can be faithful today.
A Reminder for Today
You are allowed to move slowly. You are allowed to ask God for direction more than once. When the future feels uncertain, place the next step in His hands and take it with Him.
When the Answers Take Time
Waiting can make us feel forgotten, especially when we have prayed for change and nothing seems different yet. But a quiet season is not proof that God has left us. His care is not measured only by how quickly our circumstances change. He can be with us as we wait, giving us strength, patience, and wisdom for the day in front of us.
If you are waiting for direction, ask God to help you notice what is already in your care: the person you can encourage, the responsibility you can handle today, or the choice that brings you closer to what is right and good. Sometimes guidance begins with the ordinary acts of faithfulness we can take right now.
And if you have made a mistake, remember that one difficult moment does not place your whole future beyond God’s reach. You can turn to Him, seek forgiveness where needed, learn from what happened, and ask for help as you begin again. God’s guidance can meet you even after a wrong turn.
A Gentle Practice for Today
Take a quiet moment and bring one uncertainty to God. You might ask yourself:
- What is weighing most heavily on my heart today?
- What is one wise and faithful step I can take now?
- What can I place in God’s hands because I cannot control it?
You do not need perfect words. Speak honestly, breathe slowly, and give yourself permission to take only the next step.
Prayer
Lord, You know the questions I carry and the parts of my future I cannot see. When I feel uncertain, help me trust Your wisdom and remember that I am not walking alone. Give me patience while I wait, courage to take the next step, and peace when I cannot control the outcome. Guide my choices, comfort my heart, and help me place this day in Your hands. Amen.
You do not have to see the whole road today. Ask God for guidance, take the next faithful step, and trust that He is with you along the way.
