A Giant Frightens Israel
Long ago, the Israelites were at war with the Philistines. The two armies stood on opposite hills with a valley between them.
Every day, a huge Philistine warrior named Goliath came into the valley.
Goliath was very tall, very strong, and covered with heavy armor. He carried powerful weapons and shouted at the Israelite army.
“Choose one man to fight me!” he challenged.
But the Israelite soldiers were terrified. Even King Saul was afraid.
A Young Shepherd Arrives
David was not a soldier. He was a young shepherd who cared for his father’s sheep.
One day, David’s father asked him to take food to his older brothers who were serving in the army.
When David arrived, he heard Goliath shouting his challenge.
David could not understand why everyone was so afraid.
He knew that Goliath was powerful, but David also knew something more important:
God was greater than Goliath.
David Remembers God’s Help
When King Saul heard that David wanted to fight Goliath, he was surprised.
“You are only a young man,” Saul told him. “Goliath has been a warrior for many years.”
But David remembered the times God had helped him protect his sheep.
David had faced a lion and a bear, and God had helped him.
David believed God would help him again.
So King Saul agreed to let David face Goliath.
Five Smooth Stones
Saul offered David his armor, but it was too heavy and uncomfortable.
David decided to use what he already knew how to use.
He took his shepherd’s staff, his sling, and chose five smooth stones from a stream.
Then David walked toward the giant.
David Faces Goliath
When Goliath saw David, he laughed.
The giant saw a young shepherd standing in front of him without a sword or armor.
But David was not trusting in armor.
He was trusting in God.
David told Goliath that while the giant came with weapons, David came in the name of the Lord.
The Giant Falls
Goliath began moving toward David.
David quickly reached into his bag, took out one stone, placed it in his sling, and ran toward the giant.
He swung the sling and released the stone.
The stone struck Goliath in the forehead.
The mighty giant fell to the ground.
David had defeated the warrior everyone else feared.
Why Did David Win?
David did not defeat Goliath because he was the biggest person on the battlefield.
He was not the strongest soldier and did not have the best weapons.
David won because he trusted God and courageously used what God had placed in his hands.
What Can We Learn?
Sometimes problems can feel like giants.
We may feel too small, too young, or too afraid to face them.
David’s story reminds us that courage does not mean never feeling afraid.
Courage means trusting God and doing what is right even when something looks difficult.
Your problem may look big, but God is always bigger.
A Simple Prayer
Dear God,
Thank You for the story of David. When I feel afraid or when a problem seems too big for me, help me remember that You are with me.
Give me courage to trust You and do what is right.
Amen.
